The stage lights have been turned on. Gamelan music starts urban puppet performance. However, there is something unusual. The puppeteer, who is the center of the storyteller, does not just sit still facing the color (the screen where the puppets play). He rose, interacted and greeted the audience. Then, he tells the mountainous philosophy he carries.

"Many branches symbolize the existence of many choices. Choose any branch, but later you will meet at the same shoots," said Nanang Hape, the puppeteer.

Nanang also explained the philosophy of heartbeat and blood flow in the puppet sounds. He hopes that the audience from urban circles will not be familiar with wayang.

According to him, traditional art is not just buffalo skin that is carved, played, and imagined. Wayang always talks about humans and life. "The puppet is very us. So, just watch it relax. Relax, don't be tense," he explained.

The urban puppet concept that was conceived by Nanang Hape since 2006 packed a puppet show that was collaborated with other artistic elements. In addition to shadow puppets and gamelan, there are elements of contemporary music, theater, to martial arts.

The Sumantri Sukrasana play headlined the Urban Puppet (wayang) Master's Performance at Taman Ismail Marzuki's Little Theater, Jakarta (10/6), that afternoon. The comedy element is inserted in the classical epic, with a variety of slapsticks. The hilarious and stylish supporting players play the role of puppet characters.

Tambo was about to explain that the universe often gives lessons in unusual ways. Takdir made two siblings, Sumantri and Sukrasana, be very different.

The older brother, Sumantri, is extremely handsome. Meanwhile, his younger brother, Sukrasana, was stunted and ugly. However, the opposite condition does not reduce the love between the two. They love each other since before. Until an obsession overtook Sumantri. Sumantri had fallen asleep with ambition and left her only sister.

"Sumantri, my handsome brother. What are you desperately trying to hurry up? So hurry up that love escapes you carry," Sukrasana sighed.

With a heavy heart, he took off his brother's departure to the Land of Maespati. Sumantri became a servant of King Harjunasasra.

There, Sumantri was given the decree to win the contest to win the heart of Dewi Citrawati. The Goddess requires the impossible, which is to move her favorite garden in Magada, Taman Sriwedari, to Maespati overnight.

When Sumantri was almost desperate, Sukrasana who had supernatural powers came to help. Thanks to the help of her sister, Sumantri was able to fulfill the demand of Dewi Citrawati. However, Lady Citrawati, who was enjoying his garden, was frightened when he saw Sukrasana located between flower beds.

Sumantri who felt embarrassed became angry and ordered Sukrasana to leave. However, Sukrasana refused to part from his brother. Nahas, Sumantri's crossbow which was stretched out to scare his sister finally came loose and stuck in the heart of Sukrasana.

Sumantri's blind obsession ended in injury. He negates his own younger brother who loves him. "analogy teaches that the ideal is necessary, but the ambition achieved in the wrong way is not good," Nanang said.

After telling her story about her shadow puppets, Nanang's action was followed by alternating singing and drama performances that invited laughter. Modern and traditional music collaborate to accompany the performance.

Nanang seemed to invite the audience to cry out laughter and laugh at sorrow. Audience emotions are made up and down in a short time. "our real intention is that the point of meaning in each ent (parts) can be stored in the minds of the audience," he explained.

He added, there are noble values in the Indonesian Masterpiece stage with the theme "Indonesian Soul". Among other things, mutual assistance, perseverance, humility, patience, and other valuable lessons.

"Indonesia's soul is there. He admits differences but is not afraid to live together. Admits mistakes, but is not afraid to correct them," he explained.
